1937 Riley 16/4 Special (RHD)

1937 Riley 16/4 P2P Special

Bespoke-built for endurance, this 1937 Riley 16/4 Special combines vintage pre-war engineering with genuine rally-proven toughness. HERO-ERA's own COO Federico Göttsche Bebert declared it faultless across the 2025 Badawi Trial's brutal terrain — riverbeds, rocks, and scorching tarmac — with only a puncture to show for it. Titanium-solid, remarkably comfortable, utterly relentless.

Would you like to relive adventurous motoring as it was 90 years ago? If you want open top driving in a piece of British automotive history, or if you have an ambition to tackle endurance events in a vintage car, then you must consider the marque Riley. A name no longer with us but steeped in motoring history with a record of motoring conquests.

The Riley 16 hp was a car made by the British Riley company from 1937 to 1940. It slotted into Riley's range immediately below their 18 hp V8 model.  The derivative 1937 Riley 16/4Special was conceived, designed and engineered by Ian Gladstone as a custom endurance rally car built by Gladstone and Roy Williams using a 1937 Riley "Big Four" Adelphi chassis fitted with a high-torque 1939 16/4 engine.

The former owner of Blue Diamond Riley Services, Ian, along with Roy Williams

built the Riley as a highly competitive historic vintage rally car tailored for tough competitions like HERO-ERA’s endurance rallies and longer VSCC events.

The 1939 Riley 16/4 (2,443 cc) four-cylinder engine is known for its strong torque output, paired with pre-war mechanical components. It was constructed almost entirely from vintage pre-war parts to meet strict historic motorsport regulations.

Federico Göttsche Bebert, HERO-ERA’s Chief Operating Officer used the Riley (registration) DPO on the desert endurance rally, the 2025 Badawi Trail to the Last Oasis and said quite simply afterwards, “what a machine!”

Fede continued; “From the very beginning – the engine had been rebuilt immediately before the Badawi – the car proved incredibly solid and exceptionally well put together. It is clearly the work of someone with a very deep understanding of what is actually required to do long-distance endurance rallying in a pre-war car.

“Everything is exactly where you would instinctively look for it. Spares and tools are quickly accessible and sensibly positioned close to where you are likely to need them, while every control falls naturally to hand and can be operated easily even in the middle of the toughest regularity section. The whole car feels as though it has been built out of titanium; there is an extraordinary sense of strength and solidity to it.

“And we certainly tested that. Bumps, hundreds of miles of riverbeds, gravel, rocks and sand, followed by countless more miles of scorching tarmac – and not a single mechanical fault. The sum total of our mechanical intervention was one puncture and adjusting the brakes once.

“We regularly bested much more modern machinery, and did so in remarkable comfort. Apart from the inevitable dust that comes with crossing this sort of terrain in an open pre-war car, we were perfectly comfortable, cradled by the leather bucket seats and the Riley’s wonderfully forgiving suspension.

“What struck me most was that DPO manages to combine the sense of occasion and involvement of a proper pre-war car with the confidence you need to tackle a genuinely demanding long-distance rally. It never felt fragile or precious; quite the opposite. You very quickly develop the impression that you could simply point it towards the horizon and keep going.

“Rather ironically, towards the end of the Badawi I had to retire due to a health issue. DPO, meanwhile, was perfectly willing to carry on.

“Which perhaps says everything you need to know about the car: it turned out to be considerably tougher and better put together than its occupants.”

That is quite an endorsement of the Riley! You can start to understand the joy of the endurance challenge in a vintage car. To learn more get in touch with us and we will happily give you more information.
